News Conference Tuesday in Buffalo
(Buffalo, NY) – A child sexual abuse survivor (AB 393 Doe) filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court in Erie County alleging abuse by Bishop Edward Grosz and Fr. Richard Keppeler.
Bishop Grosz is a retired bishop in the Diocese of Buffalo. He was installed as Auxiliary Bishop of Buffalo in February 1990. In his role, for the past few decades, Bp. Grosz was closely involved and handled many of the cases of clergy sexual abuse that were reported to the Diocese. In 2020, the New York Attorney General’s Office named him as a defendant in a lawsuit for violating multiple provisions of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law for reasons that included ignoring the Diocese’s own stated standards for addressing abuse allegations and preventing future abuse.
In March 2018, Fr. Richard Keppeler was placed on the Diocese of Buffalo’s list of Diocesan Priests with Substantiated Allegations of Abuse of a Minor. This is the seventh case filed under the New York Child Victims Act identifying Fr. Keppeler as a child sexual abuser.
Sexual abuse survivors across New York have exactly one month to take legal action under the New York Child Victims Act. The deadline to bring a civil lawsuit is August 13, 2021.
