Clergy Sexual Abuse Survivors Agree to $800 Million Settlement with Archdiocese of New York

(New York, NY) – Survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their attorneys have agreed to an $800 million settlement with approximately 1,300 survivors of the Archdiocese of New York. All survivors who filed claims against the Archdiocese of New York have agreed to the settlement plan.

“The unanimous agreement of survivors who filed claims against the Archdiocese of New York marks a powerful moment in the pursuit of justice,” said Jeff Anderson. “Through their courage, sacrifice, and determination, survivors have helped bring about a reckoning and a meaningful step toward accountability.”

Although the settlement plan has been agreed to, additional steps must be completed before funds can be distributed to survivors.

“This is an extraordinary achievement for the survivors. Their courage in coming forward, their strength in taking action, and their perseverance throughout this process that made this moment possible,” said Trusha Goffe. “The survivors remained resolute through years of litigation to reach this monumental settlement.”

This final settlement follows more than seven years of litigation with the Archdiocese of New York after the New York Child Victims Act claims window opened. Over the past 10 months, the Archdiocese and the Plaintiffs’ Liaison Committee engaged in intensive negotiations to reach this agreement and avoid a potential Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by the Archdiocese. The parties established a settlement framework in May, paving the way for this final resolution.
