Robert Reitmeier, OMI: Substantiated Claims of Sexual Abuse of a Minor

Robert Reitmeier, OMI

Father Reitmeier was born on September 10, 1943, and ordained on June 19, 1971. Father Reitmeier was a priest of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (“Oblates”). He worked at parishes and assignments in Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois, Missouri and Massachusetts. His Minnesota assignments included parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the Diocese of Duluth.

Father Reitmeier is included on official lists of clergy members who have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse, including lists made public by the Oblates and the Diocese of Duluth in 2015. According to the Diocese of Duluth and our research, Father Reitmeier worked at the following parishes and assignments:

  • 1971: Ordained
  • 1971-1975: Co-pastor, St. Jean Parish and School/West End Catholic, and St. Clement, Duluth, MN
  • 1975-1979: Director, Tekakwitha Children’s Home, Sisseton, SD
  • 1979-1982: Associate Pastor, St. Casimir Parish, St. Paul, MN
  • 1982: Boston College, Boston, MA (sabbatical)
  • 1982-1988 Pastory, Holy Guardian Angels Parish, St. Louis, MO
  • 1988-1991 Pastor, Precious Blood Parish, Chicago, IL
  • 1991: Leave of absence

  • 1992: Granted qualified exclaustration for one year
  • 1994-1997: Teacher, public school in Chicago, IL
  • 2007: Dismissed from Oblates

Efforts to unseal the secret documents regarding clergy sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and the Diocese of Duluth, began with the first lawsuits filed under the Child Victims Act in May and June of 2013. Since then, survivors have taken numerous actions to make the files public.

In October 2015, a jury verdict was handed down against the Diocese of Duluth in a child sexual abuse case in Ramsey County involving Fr. James Vincent Fitzgerald. On December 7, 2015, the Diocese of Duluth filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier in 2015.
