Diocese of Alexandria Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

Survivors of Clergy Sexual Abuse in Louisiana Have Rights

On October 31, 2025, the Diocese of Alexandria in Louisiana filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Diocese officials made this decision after being identified in lawsuits filed under the Louisiana Child Victims Act.

Historically, Catholic dioceses and religious orders have turned to Chapter 11 bankruptcy as a legal strategy to avoid public jury trials and limit financial exposure, allowing the institution to maintain operations while concealing the full extent of its misconduct. This tactic is often used to delay or prevent survivors of child sexual abuse from seeking justice, revealing perpetrators, and holding the Diocese accountable. Despite these efforts, survivors still have important legal rights. To learn more about how this process works, please visit our Chapter 11 Bankruptcy FAQ page

Survivors of childhood sexual abuse in Louisiana have rights and can take legal action. It’s time to take your power back.

Louisiana Child Victims Act

In June of 2024, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that the Louisiana Child Victims Act is constitutional, reversing its previous ruling. This decision means survivors have an opportunity to seek justice and accountability against perpetrators and those institutions that protected perpetrators. The law gives survivors of child sexual abuse in Louisiana a chance to take legal action, regardless of how long ago the abuse occurred. Abuse survivors now have until 2027 to take legal action to file civil suits against those who hurt them.
