Br. John Chaney was a member of the Congregation of Christian Brothers. Br. John Chaney arrived at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey in approximately 1965 and was appointed as the Junior Guidance Director. He reportedly continued to work at Bergen Catholic School until approximately 1978. In this role, he allegedly sexually abused at least three minor children. Br. Chaney was later transferred to All Hallows High School in the Bronx, New York in the 1980s where he allegedly sexually abused at least one child. At least one allegation of child sexual abuse was made against Br. Chaney in the bankruptcy matter “In re: The Christian Brothers’ Institute, et al.” In a 2016 lawsuit filed against Bergen Catholic High School alleging sexual abuse from 1963 through 1978 encompassing several students and faculty, Br. Chaney is included in the list of faculty. It is believed that Br. Chaney was residing at a Christian Brothers Residence in West Park, New York in approximately 2014. His clerical status as a brother, current whereabouts and whether he has access to children are unknown.
