Fr. Hugh A. Byrne was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Brooklyn. In 2017, Fr. Byrne was accused of sexually abusing a minor between 1971 and 1973 while at Holy Ghost (now Holy Spirit) in Brooklyn, New York. At this time, the internal Diocesan Review Board found an allegation made against Fr. Byrne in 2006 regarding abuse that allegedly occurred in 1996 to be credible. The details of the allegations, including when and where the abuse occurred, are unknown. Fr. Byrne was removed from ministry in July 2019. In August 2019, he was placed on the Diocese of Brooklyn “List of Diocesan Clergy For Whom the Diocese Received Allegations of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor,” in the section “Clergy Members of the Diocese of Brooklyn With Credible Allegations: Credibility Deemed by Diocesan Review Board Determination and/or Admission on Behalf of the Cleric.” His current whereabouts and whether he has access to children are unknown.
