Fr. Louis Schlangen was first publicly accused of sexual abuse in a 2018 lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, two priests, one of whom was Fr. Schlangen and the other Fr. Stanislaus Yunker, sexually abused the plaintiff from approximately 1973 to 1975, when she was approximately five to seven years old and she and her family were parishioners of SS. Peter and Paul in Springfield, Illinois.
