Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report Highlights Need For Transparency, Law Reform

Grand jury reports and similar investigations often highlight the importance of transparency and legal reform in cases involving child sexual abuse. When statutes of limitations are too restrictive, many survivors are unable to come forward until it is too late to pursue legal action. Law reform efforts in many states have focused on extending or temporarily removing these deadlines so survivors have the opportunity to seek justice, expose abuse, and hold institutions accountable.

Transparency is also a key factor in preventing future abuse. When institutions release the names of credibly accused offenders and provide access to records, it allows communities to be informed and helps identify additional victims who may not have previously come forward. Legal reforms and increased transparency work together to support survivors, improve accountability, and create stronger protections for children. Many advocates believe that changes to reporting laws and statutes of limitations are important steps toward preventing abuse and helping survivors seek justice and healing.

As we await the release of a long-anticipated Pennsylvania grand jury report on hundreds of predatory priests, it is more important than ever to keep demanding that bishops act to end the secrecy and tell the truth about clergy sex abuse in the Catholic Church. And it is a reminder that the time is now for statute of limitations reform for child sexual abuse cases in Pennsylvania and everywhere else.

The redacted 900-page report is expected to include approximately 300 clergy abusers. We believe there are hundreds more, many of whom are in active ministry or still alive, meaning kids are in danger. Transparency and law changes that enable survivors to seek justice, expose predators and hold institutions accountable are vitally important.

And as Jeff Anderson says here in his video blog, it is time for the healing to begin.
