Court Rules Bar Date for Diocese of Syracuse Bankruptcy Will Remain April 15, 2021

(Syracuse, NY) – During a hearing today in the Diocese of Syracuse’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, Chief Judge Margaret Cangilos-Ruiz of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of New York ruled that the original bar date of April 15, 2021, will remain in place.

“The shortened deadline emphasizes the urgency for survivors to break their silence and make the call—and make it now. Time is running out,” said attorney Jeff Anderson of Jeff Anderson & Associates.

Anderson and Albany attorney Cynthia LaFave represent hundreds of survivors of child sexual abuse by clergy in Upstate New York and have filed more than 60 clergy sexual abuse cases against the Diocese since the New York Child Victims Act took effect in August of 2019.

“It’s imperative that survivors come forward as soon as possible to make their voices heard,” said LaFave. “It’s time, now, to share the truths that have been carried as painful secrets for so long.”
