The jury’s decision is not a full reckoning but the truth is now revealed. This trial is unprecedented; it has set a pathway and a standard for prosecutors across the United States and made it less likely for the secrets, patterns and practices of the past to be repeated. Until now, no top Catholic officials have been criminally convicted for child endangerment. It gives great hope and promise for a better future now that this precedent has been made and this truth has been revealed through the courage of so many.
The verdict renews hope for survivors, demonstrating that the system can answer the call of justice. We are deeply grateful for the many survivors with whom we are working and who have broken the silence to prevent the abuse of others. For decades the top officials of the Roman Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and elsewhere have operated above the law and with impunity believing that they could not and would never be held accountable.
A new and better day is upon us and upon the shoulders of the courageous survivors with whom we stand.
