“The Diocese’s decision to file for bankruptcy is closing a door to justice and accountability.” – Jeff Anderson
(Fresno, CA) – Today, the Diocese of Fresno filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. This decision is a self-serving tactic that protects the Diocese by minimizing their role in decades of sexual crimes. Fresno is the fifth California diocese to file for bankruptcy following the close of the Child Victims Act in 2022.
“Many survivors have been fighting a battle against their trauma for decades,” said attorney Jennifer Stein. “Now, survivors have to face yet another drawn-out battle – fighting for justice and accountability in a bankruptcy court.”
The Diocese of Fresno released a statement in May 2024, announcing its imminent decision to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. We believe the diocese delayed the filing in an attempt to conceal the truth and evade accountability from the survivors who bravely took action under the Child Victims Act.
“The Diocese of Fresno and its bishop must be held accountable. By forcing survivors into Bankruptcy Court, they are once again denying responsibility,” said Jeff Anderson. “But we will stand with survivors and fight for the full measure of truth, justice, and healing they deserve.”
