“This is a testament to the survivors’ courage, perseverance, and unwavering demand for reckoning,” – Jeff Anderson
(Ogdensburg, NY) – Today, a settlement was announced in the Diocese of Ogdensburg bankruptcy case on behalf of survivors of child sexual abuse who courageously came forward to file claims. The $45 million settlement includes contributions from the Diocese of Ogdensburg, its parishes, and affiliated entities.
“We are deeply grateful to the survivors who found the courage to come forward and expose painful truths that had remained hidden for far too long,” said Taylor Stippel Sloan. “While there is still more work ahead, today’s settlement marks an important step toward justice and accountability for survivors in the Diocese of Ogdensburg.”
Partnered with LaFave, Wein, Frament, & Karic, Jeff Anderson & Associates represents 58 survivors who have brought claims against the Diocese of Ogdensburg under the New York Child Victims Act.
“These survivors who came forward have not only gained justice in the only way it can be had, they have also made sure that children of today and tomorrow live in a safer world. Being able to work with these survivors through this process has been and will continue to be something we are deeply committed to and also incredibly thankful for,” said Cynthia LaFave. “It is the fortitude of these survivors that has brought this historic day about. Finally, the Diocese of Ogdensburg is accepting some responsibility for the horrors of the past.”
In addition to the financial settlement, the Survivor Committee and the Diocese will continue negotiations regarding significant non-monetary provisions, including enhancements to child protection policies and the public disclosure of information related to clergy and other personnel accused of sexual abuse.
