CEDARBURG – A Cedarburg man who is suing the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay for covering up an abusive priest’s past misdeeds said he isn’t challenging the church, but rather those in charge of it.
“The church is the people. It’s the leadership we’re challenging,” said Todd Merryfield, who is suing the diocese with his brother, Troy, after they were abused as children by one of its priests.
“They could have stopped this at any point and none of us would be going through this.”

Civil suit alleges church failed to protect boys
Two brothers molested by a priest filed a fraud lawsuit Wednesday, alleging the overseeing diocese knew the priest had a history of abusing children and allowed him access to the pair anyway.
A judge threw out a lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of Superior, saying the diocese can’t be forced to release information about how the church deals with sex abuse by priests.
A judge dismissed the suit seeking names of priests suspected of sex abuse. It stemmed from two killings in 2002 at a funeral home.
